Passively Looking for Manager/Technician jobs within 25 miles of Arcadia, California.
40 years in roughly. Owned shop as partner with my father 18 years, and worked under him for 12 years prior to that (Since age 10!). Trained and experienced in service advising, shop management, multiple management and advising certifications, currently working as Shop Foreman and Diagnostic Specialist overseeing 5 techs and troubleshooting work for entire shop. Experienced in labscope, enhanced scantool use, gas analyzer, current probes, and use of various specialty diagnostic tools. Beta tester for multiple tool companies for 7 years. Former BAR technician advisor, reporting directly to Sacramento regarding CAL SMOG industry issues and fiel requirements. Current shop had 80% fix it right 1st time average when I arrived. within 3 months number rose to 94%, and stayed mid 90s during my tenure. No employee has ever had a problem with me that couldnt be worked out in friendly manner, and most all coworkers at my old shop and the shop I currently work for consider me the 1st tech they will ask for help without reservation. Have handled consumer complaint responses with 100% success rate at my shop, and keeping this shop in the 90s (when a complaint is filed, the shop settles the matter with the consumer without issue, OR the shop was found to have done everything legally and properly by AAA or BAR standards. (barring unforeseen occurrences or unintentional employee mistakes that were later corrected).
I have been married 18 years, I have 2 small children who are both Autistic and that consumes the majority of my time when not working. I used to restore classic mustangs and cougars as a job and hobby in my teens and 20s. Several show winners and magazine feature cars. Still play around with them when the chance presents itself. Willing to listen to offers always, but to relocate, the offer would need to be golden, in an area with very good support services for my children which will generally mean large metropolitan areas only at least at this time. Never done any drugs in my life (no need, no desire), and have no problems with flexible hours for work environments with rotating schedules. I like figuring it out. more important than the pay...which is why I request the harder ones and work salary the past 7 years. allows me freedom to not worry what lengths I can afford to go to. I do whatever it takes because the pay is the same. During Covid my previous job of 15 years was closed, so I moved to a couple of different chainstores. 2nd being transmission specialty, was decent. learned a fair amount about transmission diag and systems integration and how to diag one system through another. That job ended as of April 23, so Ill be looking again. Smog license still current, mostly at my age Im better suited to diagnostic specialty and or shop foreman like I was at Complete Auto for a decade.
Other tidbits...hmmm. ASC emissions chair for a year. Researched and made assessments of Cal Smog and best plans/advices for ASC and member shops to approach the future with. Worked at California BAR as a technician advisory council member for 2 years, Reported directly to the Chief on Cal Smog stuff. Got a perfect score on my 1st computer smog exam. Been near perfect on a few others. (It would be easier if they didnt have wrong answers as their preferred choice!)
Tools and Equipment
Have used most aftermarket scantools of the past 15 years as well as most OEs. Owned the majority of them at least for short intervals. Kinda a hobby. I like practicing with toys. Currently own Tech 2, Ford IDS, Mazda IDS, JAG LR IDS, Nissan Consult 1, 2, and 3, honda HDS, Toyota Techstream, ODIS for Audi/VW(still working on learning that one,,,steep curve), VAGCOM, Mercedes SDS compact3-4, Bosch KTS for Porsche. Very experienced with Autologic on all euro models in diag, coding and programming. No I DO NOT own an Autel. I have pretty much everything else, why add that last one? Leave something for tomorrow. Have about 4 labscopes, 3 or 4 multimeters, a few nice specialty tools like waekon flashers, temp guns, FLIR thermal camera. pulse flashers, midtronics conductance testers, 3 or 4 low current probes, 2 or 3 high current probes, an ignition scope for older cars (Interro...old but still does the job). Have the majority of the AVI video library at least stuff that interested me (I probably bought Ill guess 40 of em? maybe 50?) and take as much retraining as the shop will contribute to. Power probe 1, hook, and 4 is coming. What else? Some key generators for coding, a few tools I havent played much with (Nissan, Volvo...just dont see that many...and rarely get Chryslers so I have yet to try and aquire a Witech, own an iscan2 WT that does decent Chrysler so havent been desperate so far.)
I buy alot of tools. I never wanna fail on a diag because I didnt bring big enough guns...if I fail...its gonna be due to stupidity!
(And no, I dont fail much. This shop does 2 million a year and I diag or assist diag 70% of it).
familiar with AC diag and repair, some hybrid diag and repair, ABS, air suspension. If it gets lobbed at me, I dig and scratch and usually figure it out with the equipment we have. Never had the luxury of specializing here, so I dont have the quick memorization skills I had when I was doing mainly Mustangs...we do all makes and models...no limits. The past month, a 54 Rolls Royce, a 69 Corvette, a 2015 BMW, 2007 Jaguar, 2014 Rover, Many Camrys, Mustangs, Mercedes, Porsches, Nissans from 2000-2010. We rarely say no (Not easy...probably not financially smart either...hard work trying to fix everything and not make mistakes!).
If I dont own it and decide I want it...I buy it.
Student - Many and continuing
Cal State Northridge 1986 to 1991 on scholarship. qualified AA in Political Science and Journalism, 9 units short of BA, left for family emergency and went to work to pay bills.
Over 100 aftermarket and OEM classes/certs since 1992, Calsmog, ASE master, various factory certifications for taking the classes and passing an exam. Hybrid certs, Bosche Certs, Bosch DFI Cert(Required by current employer to stay Bosch certified), Current smog license with passing STAR score (usually always over 78 for 2 years, currently lower but Ill chalk that up to the odd quarter?). On 2 occasions in past 8 years have had BAR investigate my repairs or tests for consumer complaint or random inquiry, and both cases BAR determined in 1st meeting that proper procedures and conclusions were reached and no followup action was dictated. Have been assistant/guest trainer for John Marshall High School in Los Angeles teaching basic theory and scope use for ignition, and the theory of Smog and Emissions testing and its relationship to repair and diagnostics for their future if they choose to enter the industry. Have made a point of contributing to industry as often as I can in whatever ways I can. It pays in its own way and teaches more than can be measured by classes or certs.
Currently studying alternative fuels, possibly going to get diesel certified next (have done some mercedes and Ford diesel work here with good success, would like to know more before declaring I wanna buy it a ring or anything).
Shop Master Tech/FOreman
Due to the slowdowns caused by limited driving during COVID19, my employer had to send some of the staff home. I was their most expensive asset (Only tech with a hard guarantee). They gave me my last paycheck 7-12-2020 and said there isnt adequate work to keep paying me my full salary when the other guys are on commission only and wont cause the shop to operate at a loss during the slowdown. They said when work picks back up I will be their 1st and only call.
(Of course I will, I personally own 80% of the diagnostic equipment in the shop!)
I dont expect I will be back there. As the Covid issue is not going away this week or this month, I will not be waiting and am seeking new employment. I am not 25 years old anymore. Im a 52 year old diabetic with bad knees and worse eyesight. I am however a diagnostic master technician experienced in multiple tools and brands including high end euro. I am too old to be promising to crank out 50 hours a week and sing for my supper. If you want a flat rate hours miner I am not that tech. The pay average of every tech at Complete INCREASED following my hiring. I am a good support tech, I work and play well with others, I solve the hard problems without losing my patience or giving up...including vehicles that had been given up on by other shops and dealerships. I am far from the perfect tech, but everywhere Ive been, the cars were fixed better than before I arrived. retraining is my hobby. Time permitting.
Again, if you need diagnostics and management/shop foreman I am actively seeking employment. If you want a flat rate tech, do not contact me or make an offer saying the last guy averaged 100 hours a week..I dont want his job for the same reason he no longer has his job. BTW, the lack of bad habits allowed me to save all my money. So I have ZERO need to work immediately. I can take a month off and still not need to cash that final paycheck because I still havent touched the previous one. Im looking for a long term fit. I stayed at the last job 15 years almost. I dont wanna move again. Its, too much work.
And before anyone asks, yes I will pass a drug test, every day of my life for 50 years. Never done or will.
